Photography Tip #4 25/02/2011
Using different camera modes
If your wanting to learn more from your camera I suggest switching that dial from Auto to one of the manual pre-sets or manual itself if you fancy going hardcore.
When I go out and shoot I tend to use full manual most of the time but am starting to learn the benefits of using the other modes below
P – Program AE. Sets the exposure (shutter speed and aperture) automatically.
Tv – Shutter-priority AE. For action shots. Tv stands for time value; freeze action or create a blur.
Av – Aperture-priority AE. Adjusts depth of field.
M – Manual Exposure. You can set the shutter speed and aperture as you like.
A-Dep – Automatic depth of field.
Get to know your camera and what different modes do to add effect to your shot, I found that one of the best ways to practice/learn was using water, for example if your near the sea you should try and see what difference it makes when taking a photo with a longer shutter/exposure than usual, I guarantee you’ll be surprised (If done correctly that is)
.
If your not by the sea you can just use a tap, or a shower maybe?.
Compose your shot, set the camera to ‘TV’ Mode and make sure your exposure is correct:
You can do this by holding the ‘AV’ button on the back of your camera and scrolling the wheel until the little line is in the middle
.
Once you have that set just experiment taking a few shots with different shutter speeds (scrolling the wheel) you’ll find the longer the
shutter the more blurry/smoky the water goes.
