Planning a wedding is an exciting journey, but it comes with a lot of decisions to make—and choosing the right photographer is one of the most important.

As a wedding photographer, I’ve heard a variety of questions over the years.

In this post, I’ll cover some of the most common ones, a few you should ask but might not think of, and sprinkle in a bit of fun for good measure.

Common Questions Couples Ask

  1. “How far in advance should we book you?”

Most photographers recommend booking 12-18 months in advance, especially if your wedding falls during peak season. Popular dates get snapped up quickly, so don’t delay!

  2. “How many photos will we receive?”

This varies by photographer and what coverage is required, but for a full-day wedding, you can typically expect 600-1000+ professionally edited images. Quality over quantity is key!

  3. “What’s your style?”

Every photographer has a unique approach. Some lean towards candid, documentary-style shots, while others favour posed and dramatic portraits. Look at portfolios to see if the style matches your vision.

  4. “Do you edit the photos?”

Absolutely! Professional editing ensures your photos look their best. Editing includes colour correction, lighting adjustments, and removing any distractions like a stray hair or an accidental photobomb.

  5. “What happens if you’re photographer is ill on our wedding day?”

A professional photographer should always have a backup plan. Personally, I work with a trusted network of photographers who could step in if needed. (Not to tempt fate, in the 12+ years shooting weddings I thankfully have NEVER had to do this, I’d need to be hospitalised to miss your big day!)

  6. “Do you offer packages or bespoke options?”

Most photographers offer a range of packages to suit different needs, from a few hours of coverage to full-day storytelling. Don’t be afraid to ask about customisation.

Questions You Should Ask

Now, here are a few questions you might not think to ask but are just as important:

  1. “How do you handle unpredictable weather?”

Whether it’s a surprise drizzle or a windy seaside ceremony, a seasoned photographer knows how to adapt and create beautiful images regardless of the conditions. You’d be surprised how creative we can get with unexpected weather!.

  2. “How do you make camera-shy people feel comfortable?”

I get it, not everyone loves being in front of the camera. A good photographer knows how to put you at ease and capture natural, authentic moments. I personally think that 90% of being a great reputable photographer comes down to being likeable, reading the room, fulfilling that PASSION & genuinely LOVE being in the moment…it truly shows in the photo’s.

  3. “Do you scout the venue beforehand?”

If your venue is new to your photographer, It’s always helpful visiting the venue ahead of time or arriving early to find the best spots for your couple’s portraits.

  4. “How do you handle family group shots?”

Organised group photos can be one of the most stressful parts of the day. A photographer with a clear plan and a firm but friendly approach makes all the difference.

My personal view with this could sound unexpected but I try and snap groups as quick as possible, after all, who wants to be waiting around for ages missing out on the fun!

I try my best to not be that guy, there’s often plenty of opportunities to catch groups throughout the day so don’t panic & feel they have to all be crammed into one part of the day.

Unexpected Questions and Memorable Moments

Some of the most entertaining questions I’ve received:

  • “Can you Photoshop my ex out of the photos?” (Short answer: Yes, but we might need to have a chat!)

  • Do you think our dog could wear a GoPro down the aisle?” (Please, yes. And send me the footage!)

  • “Can you make my uncle stop dancing like that?” (Sadly, no.)

My favourite personal touch throughout the day is that I LOVE having fun, the odd cheeky comment, involving myself with family jokes, creating memorable moments which often has the family/guests talking about indefinitely after the big day itself.

An Example:

If I had a £1 for eveytime I heard “Can you make me slimer and remove wrinkles?” I’d be a millionaire, that’s not even an exaggeration.

My usual response is: “Oh stop it, you look stunning as you are, besides, there’s only so much Photoshop can do, and I’m the photographer…not the magician!” wink

Tips to Help You Choose the Right Photographer

  1. Look at Full Galleries

A portfolio gives you a sense of their style, but a full gallery from a wedding shows how they handle different lighting, settings, and moments.

  2. Get to Know Them

Your photographer will be by your side for most of the day, so having a good connection is important. A pre-wedding chat or engagement shoot is a great way to bond. Let’s face it, you would’nt want a photographer who you can’t be yourself around…the day is an explosion of emotions as it is.

Think About Your Timeline
Photographers can help you plan your schedule to ensure there’s enough time for the shots you want, like golden hour portraits or a sparkler exit.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding photographer is there to tell your story—every laugh, tear, and dance move in between. Asking the right questions ensures you’ll find someone who fits your vision and can deliver images you’ll treasure forever.

Remember, this isn’t just about hiring a service; it’s about choosing someone you trust to capture your love story.

Dan became a family member for the day – our 3 year old was asking when he was next going to see Dan!

We got married in July 2024 and without Dan our day would never have been so easy.

Dan immersed himself into the day as if he was there as a guest.

All the while remaining professional and doing what he is so good at doing.

He helped with everything, from the girls getting ready in the morning to arranging everybody to get ready for our first dance.

His ideas for photos were brilliant and has given us so many beautiful pictures to remind us of our special day.

We really can’t thank Dan enough and really couldn’t recommend him any higher.

All we can say is he doesn’t charge enough for what he does! Not just a photographer he made the sun shine and the day super smooth.

Thank you so much

"When the staff are just as invested in the day as the couple, it transforms a beautiful wedding into an unforgettable experience."

Why the Venue Staff Matter

In my experience, no matter how beautiful a venue may be, it’s the people running it that can truly elevate the day.

Great staff take pressure off the couple, guide the flow of the event, and even help us suppliers feel like a valued part of the team.

That sense of shared purpose makes a huge difference – from keeping timelines smooth to creating a relaxed, welcoming vibe that shines through in every photo.

Whether it’s a coordinator checking in with the couple, a bartender making everyone smile, or a team member making sure suppliers are looked after with a coffee (always appreciated!), it all adds up to something pretty magical.
